7-KETO-DHEA / 7-Keto-dehydroepiandrosterone
What is it?
> Scientific/Other Names: 7-Keto-dehydroepiandrosterone
> Supplement Type: Hormone metabolite
> Taken as: Capsules or tablets
7-Keto-DHEA is a synthetic derivative of DHEA, which is a hormone naturally produced by the body. It is believed to enhance metabolism and promote weight loss by increasing thermogenesis, the process by which the body generates heat and burns calories.
How is it taken?
Typically taken orally in the form of capsules or tablets.
What are the benefits of taking 7-Keto-DHEA?
7-Keto-DHEA is thought to:
- Boost metabolism and aid in weight loss
- Enhance immune function
- Improve memory and cognitive function
- Increase energy levels
- Support healthy aging
Unlike DHEA, 7-Keto-DHEA does not convert into estrogen or testosterone in the body, which makes it a popular choice for individuals seeking the benefits of DHEA without the hormonal side effects.
How does it work?
7-Keto-DHEA is believed to enhance metabolism by increasing the activity of thermogenic enzymes, which boost the body’s ability to burn fat.
It may also support immune function by modulating immune responses and reducing inflammation.
Additionally, it is thought to have neuroprotective effects, potentially improving cognitive function and memory. Unlike DHEA, 7-Keto-DHEA does not convert to sex hormones, thus minimizing the risk of hormonal side effects.

Is there evidence that it helps with weight loss?
> Clinical Trials: Limited number of human trials
> Test Size: Small to medium (less than 50 to 250 participants)
> Results: Some studies suggest that 7-Keto-DHEA can significantly increase metabolic rate and promote modest weight loss when combined with a calorie-restricted diet and exercise.
– One clinical trial demonstrated slightly greater weight loss in participants vs the placebo (1.9kg vs 4.2lbs), over 8 weeks.
– There was a more notable effect on metabolism however, as the decrease in metabolic rate that you often get with dieting was effectively reversed over 7 days of caloric deficit. However, the trial was short and number of participants was small, so the longer term impact and efficacy is unknown.
– Preliminary evidence also indicates potential benefits for immune function and cognitive performance. However, more extensive research is needed to fully confirm these effects.
See our guide on trial sizes.
What is the effective dose of Green Tea?
Commonly recommended dose is 100-200 mg taken twice per day

So, does it work?
OK, but is it safe?
- Generally considered safe at recommended doses.
- Possible side effects: mild gastrointestinal issues, headache, and insomnia
- Long-term safety data is limited, so prolonged use should be monitored by a healthcare provider
- May interact with thyroid medications and other hormone-related treatments, so consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended
